I was wanting to replace the liner but also make it a statement in our yard. Jan and I talked about the waterfall and the transition between the  upper and lower pond. "It is not until the freight company drops off a pallet the size and weight of a refrigerator that you realize that custom aquariums don’t come with instructions or any guidance. There’s companies that will build and ship whatever you dream up but once it’s delivered it’s all your problem. I hired an installer from a reefing facebook group and it was a disaster. They said they’d done tanks this size (155g, 48x30x25) but I profoundly doubt it. They got the tank on the stand and that’s about all they did right. Their plumbing job was a tangled mess. It also leaked. I tore out their mess and put in a proper reef plumbing job with the correct valves and a manifold etc. It still leaked. After two weeks of literally banging my head on the wall (doesn’t fix leaks), and even having a friend come to lift this beast onto sawhorses so we could access the bulkheads, I gave up and started calling aquarium service people. I learned two things: first, no one wants to work on a tank they didn’t sell and set up, and two a lot of aquarium service people are jerks. One guy said “I’m not in the business of fixing other people’s mistakes.” Other people refused to come to Marin as if it was the middle of nowhere instead of 20 minutes from San Francisco. Finally I reached Jan and it was such an incredible relief. From the first interaction he never made me feel bad or stupid for trying to DIY. He made several suggestions and when it kept leaking he agreed to an in-home repair attempt. It wasn’t easy to fix all the mistakes but Jan not only carefully disassembled my plumbing but explained each thing he was doing. He didn’t just treat a novice respectfully, he actually taught me a lot. I sat by my tank after he left and just watched it do nothing… blissful nothing… for hours. No drips, no seeps… just dry nothing under the stand. To add to the experience? Jan is affordable. While cost is relative, some of the quotes I got from other services were eye-popping; hey I’m a lawyer and I don’t charge THAT much to do a court appearance. I truly hope to have Jan as an ongoing resource and I cannot recommend him enough."  Theodore S.
